Today, we celebrate 244 years since the Declaration of Independence was signed. I strongly believe that in order to keep the vision of what our founders saw in America, we all have an important role - to be engaged citizens and advocates.
1) Register to vote and get educated on the issues facing our nation. You probably are already registered to vote, but if not, take a few minutes to register now. Now, take some time to get to know who is on the ballot and what they stand for. Many people focus on the presidential election. Historically, more people vote on a presidential election year than other years. Remember - election day takes place every year. And local elections impact your day-to-day life, in some ways, more than national elections. Your school board makes decisions that impact the quality of your community's education. It was governors, state officials, city mayors, and county leaders who made the critical decisions on how your community responded to the pandemic.
2) Use your professional skills to serve. Most cities and counties have numerous citizen boards where you can influence the decisions made in your local community. These board positions are typically appointed and have established terms. The easiest way to learn about those opportunities is to check out your local government's website. I've signed up for a mailing list and get notifications for vacancies on my city/county boards.
3) One of my favorite quotes is - "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has" by Margaret Mead. 244 years ago a small group of 56 delegates created a vision for a new country that forever changed history. In our democracy, each of us has that power - to stand up and help build a better America. If you don't like something about our country, then you can change it. It won't be easy but with a like-minded group of people, you can change history.
